paint the basilica 2022
Calling All Artists!
“Paint the Basilica” is a 2-day (August 6-7) “Plein Air” event held in conjunction with our 2022 Father Baker Day Weekend activities. Participants can come out, set up space and create their unique vision of OLV Basilica. Artists are welcome to be on-site both days, although they are not required to do so. Details:
- Artists may set up beginning at 9 a.m. (on one or both days) outside the Basilica and across Ridge Road outside of the 780 or 790 Ridge Road buildings, by the Father Baker Statue, or in the Candle Shrine Garden.
- While on-site, artists also have an opportunity to promote their work. We anticipate more than 800 visitors during this two-day period.
- OLV staff will be available to assist participants with any issues. Public restrooms are available in the lower level of the Basilica.
- Artists wishing to have their work judged and displayed for sale in the lower level of the Basilica must submit their work no later than August 22 to the OLV Charities administration building at 780 Ridge Road. Drop-offs can be scheduled by calling (716) 828-9610.
- Finished work should be suitable for hanging. A value for sale must be submitted at the time of drop-off.
- Judging will take place prior to an art opening to be held September 8 in the Basilica's Father Baker Museum. That night, prizes of $300, $200 and $100 will be presented.
- Douglas Mess, a graphic designer who recently retired from OLV and lifelong painter, will serve as judge. For more information on his credentials, please go to www.dougmess.com.
- Work will be on display at the Basilica from September 8-20.
- A live concert, featuring JoAnn Faletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, will be taking place on Sept. 18 and is expected to bring 500+ visitors to the Shrine.
- Artists may price their artwork and provide contact information.
- Participants are asked to provide a 20% donation to OLV National Shrine & Basilica for its ongoing restoration for all sold artwork.
All artwork must be picked up no later than Friday, September 23, by calling (716) 828-9610.
