dome RESTORATION project

When construction on the Basilica was completed in 1925, its copper dome, at 80 feet in diameter, was the second largest in the country at the time, smaller only than the U.S. Capitol building. Since then, though, its copper elements have stood up to unabated lake-effect winds, rain and snow for 100 years.

Originally constructed of 16-ounce copper sheeting, most sections have seen their thickness lessoned to the point that new patches cannot be soldered to the original copper and can no longer be maintained. The new copper roofing is being constructed of 20-ounce sheeting and is expected to last 100+ years.

Timeframe:

  • End of 2025: Seven of 16 copper bays opened & protected
  • End of 2026: All 16 bays replaced; Two angels cleaned & repaired
  • End of 2027: Removal/replacement of cupola; Restoraton of all four angels. Scaffolding removed
